Contingency plans (unfinished)

Meet parents in grocery store: leave items in cart, leave store. Do not engage. 

See parents on street, public places: avoid. Do not engage. 

Parents come to church when we are there: get kids and leave discreetly. If they try to talk to us, ignore them. 

Meet unexpectedly at a social gathering, such as with my brother. Get kids, leave the gathering. 

In all cases:
  • If they try to talk to us, walk by, ignore
  • If they sneak up behind me and give me a hug, extricate self, and leave. It is OK to express anger such as, “Don’t touch me!” Or “Get off of me!”
  • If they follow, say loudly, “leave me alone. Stop following me!”
  • If they begin yelling at me, turn and walk away. Do not engage. 
  • If they become violent, walk to car. Do not try to drive car with them in front or near. If they block access, lock doors, call police.

It is interesting to me that I am more in control of my family then my dad ever was. I tell my kids to clean up, and they do. I suggest we go out for a drive, and people pile into the car.  My dad stomped and raged: but he was out of control of himself, and showed no consistency. I obeyed, out of petrified fear. But the others did not. And I disobeyed behind his back when I could. I am in more control of my family than my father ever was. But "control" is not the right word. They love me, respect me, want to please me. Want to do life with me.  But we all hated and feared my dad. Gifts in wartime

Part of the difficulty of writing this blog is being aware that healthy people will read it, and completely misunderstand it. As Chantal reminded me: “you can only have empathy for something that you yourself have experienced.” This May not be completely true: I felt for my wife as she gave birth. But I will never really understand what she went trough.  Take the giving of gifts.  My mom used to lavish my kids with very costly gifts. Easily spending upwards of $100 per birthday. Then giving on Easter, Valentine’s Day, and every other holiday. Enough that I worked (legitimately) that they were squandering all of their retirement wealth on needless gifts.  Now, in wartime, the gifts continue, but are different. Cheap things from the dollar store. Toys too old, to young. Disproportionate gifts. All of the things that we asked them not to do. Sowing and reaping...

I recently was thinking about my parents. What will they feel when I completely disown them? I am a naturally compassionate person. I keep thinking of the pain it would cause me were I in their shoes. The pain it may cause them. I don't like these thoughts. I don't want to cause anyone pain. But then, the thought came to me, “well…what do they expect ?” Really…what do they expect? After treating me this poorly for this long…if they don’t on some level expect this, then they are really out of touch. It’s like mistreating a dog for years, and all of a sudden it bites you.  Like neglecting a car for years, and it leaves you stranded. Neglect, control, and abuse a child, and one day, he will reject you and chose to live his own life. What were you expecting, exactly…?

Review: A Christian's Guide to No Contact

As I have mentioned before, this blog was birthed out of my private journals. For that reason, a lot of my earlier posts have important gaps in them, and some important steps of the journey go undocumented. Perhaps the most important step is my reading A Christian’s Guide to No Contact .  This was one of the first books that I read, and it had a profound impact on me. At the time, I thought that her words were very good, but perhaps her language was bit harsh. She kept referring to her parents as “narcissistic psychopaths.” At the time, I did not know what these words meant, and so I thought she was simply calling them names. I now understand that these are technical terms for real psychological conditions.
